As GET reported on our own blog, " fund Arabic textbooks to schools that 'timeshare' their facilities and teachers, enabling refugees in Syria to gain an education. A moving initiative that will save children from child labour exploitation and protects their own culture by providing the books in their own language. "
We think there is something truly special about this initiative. In fact a number of things:
This allows the refugee children to use their own language of instruction, quickly catch up on missed content and engage with educational thinking not available on the streets, under the bridges or in the broken buildings where they live. This initiative was so far from the usual first-world response that it shows a pure desire to help.
Additionally, they partnered. On the ground are the local people - exiled teachers - with a deep understand of the needs, aspirations and context of the problem. The Scottish charity chose to partner and not send cash to a nameless distribution centre. They were targeted, timely and supported a campaign that already had momentum.
Now, the United Nations wants to copy the model and fund it with $195m.
